I am building a Translation Provider plugin and I want to log the SDL Trados Studio version in a file (along with Windows version, .NET version). Is there a way to use the API to get version info (e.g. "SDL Trados Studio 2017" or "SDL Trados Studio 2015")? I found an old thread from 2012 but am not sure it is applicable. I also searched the API docs and didn't find it.

I'm sorry to hear you have issues with our packages. Could you please send me the stack trace you received when you try to use Sdl.Community.Toolkit.Core?
I just checked the package Sdl.Community.Toolkit.Core(0.6.1) in one of our projects and Studio loads it without problems, we are able to see Studio installed versions.
To see the source code of the project which I just checked and a sample code on how you can get the installed version please take a look here. Did you added the ToolkitCore.dll in manifest file? Like this:

<File>Sdl.Community.Toolkit.Core.dll</File>
</Include>
