Accepted, Not Yet Planned

Update: Though this is a great idea, this specific request is currently not planned based on our program planning and prioritization of all Tridion Sites ideas for early 2018. We may revisit this and other great ideas based on more information and additional votes.

Allow Favourites to be renamed and re-ordered within the CME

When I add Favourites in the CME, I get a lot of items called 'Home', which doesn't allow me to see which Publication they're from. It would be great if each user could rename and re-order these.

Also, side note, it would be good if SDL Web Ideas was searchable to prevent duplicate ideas being logged :)

  • @Mark - Thanks for taking the time to comment.

You can get around the problem of having multiple pages called 'Index' by viewing all of your bookmarks in the CME homepage (e.g. marks-tridion.com/.../ as it shows the 'Location' of each item.

However, it would still be good to be able to rename these (as you can a browser bookmark) and to re-order them.

I use favourites a lot. Please don't take them away. Here's hoping that my idea makes the cut for Tridion 10! ;)

  • That's a shame this didn't seem to make the cut (it's actually been around for years). This probably seems trivial form a technical perspective (and having WebDav URLs etc. is just a technical solution around what a non-technical person would reasonably expect to be able to do). Given that as soon as an editor adds a second "Index" page it's confirmed as useless, I'd suggest favourites are removed rather than being another niggle that detracts from a generally pretty functional GUI.

  • Thanks gents. My concern was more about the items as they appear in the Shortcuts area.

Alvin - You're right, the list view does allow the items to be filtered and sorted. This is really useful.

Rick - I appreciate that I've bundled a few things in here. If I had to pick one item, then being able to rename each favourite would be most important.

  • The Publication isn't that clear but it should be visible in the location column when viewing Favorites in the list (I think it's a WebDAV url). This is likely because Favorites could include things outside a Publication.

It could, however, still be useful to somehow group or see Favorites under a specific Publication or easily know where items "live" when viewing Favorites in the item picker (and list view as requested).

Note that users CAN re-order Favorites, but not from the tree view. Go to Favorites so they show in the list view and from there you can move them up/down. Renaming them isn't possible, though.

One hack I've seen by a customer is to make a Publication a favorite and then re-order Favorites to sort accordingly (not ideal, but possible).

I'll let others comment on priority but let me point out:

    • The list view, tree view in the CME, and picker view are all separate--in this request and others related to Favorites be sure to consider the different scenarios (e.g. the picker view of Favorites filters to item types but the other views do not)
    • When you're dealing with manual ordering, the next request is likely the ability to switch to automatic/alphanumeric ordering at will :-)
    • When you let users rename something, they may still be interested in knowing original name and Publication context (e.g. in a separate location in the UI, tooltip, etc.).
  • The problem you describe regarding “ambiguous” names could also be solved by letting favorite names reflect (part of) the path to the item.  Maybe in combination with making the name user-editable.

Which of the two seems most important to you?
