Recently we have been getting inquiries about our support policy related to Oracle Java SE and support for Java 11 in the product. With this post I would like to clarify our position regarding these topics.
SDL Tridion Sites uses Java technology for the Dynamic Experience Delivery platform and some parts of the Content Manager platform. As of January 2019 Oracle stopped providing free public updates for Oracle Java SE 8 (see https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/java-se-support-roadmap.html). This means that customers will need a paid subscription or a support contract with Oracle to be able to obtain updates.
With the upcoming release of SDL Tridion Sites 9.1, we will add support for Java 11. To provide our customers on SDL Tridion Sites 9.0 with an alternative, we have tested and will provide support using AdoptOpenJDK 8 64-bit (Hotspot JVM) for SDL Tridion Sites 9.0. AdoptOpenJDK is free to use, and provides regular maintenance and security updates. Paid support for AdoptOpenJDK is also available from organizations such as IBM if needed.
For future releases we will standardize on both Oracle Java SE and AdoptOpenJDK for official platform support.
Edit 29 August 2019: initially the blog post indicated we limit platform support to AdoptOpenJDK only. With the release of Tridion Sites 9.1 we have decided to support both AdoptOpenJDK and Oracle Java SE.
