TMS - Task Upload Error - Bilingual file upload failed

Symptoms/Context:

The task upload fails with the following error message: Bilingual file upload failed.
 
Root Cause:
The error message is generic, but the usual indication is that the bilingual file uploaded is corrupted or invalid. Further validation steps are needed to identify the root cause of the upload failure;

  • Resolution:

    • Wait a few minutes then attempt to upload the task again. 
    • Attempt to view the history of the task as it may offer more information on the cause of the upload fail. If you do not have permissions to view the task history ask a system administrator to check.
    • Ensure the correct bilingual format is used. It's important to upload the same format of file that was downloaded from SDL TMS. 
    • Perform validation steps to isolate the issue. These steps are different and dependent on which format was used;

    ITD 

    Upon opening the ITD file using SDLX Edit, you should visually check the translated segments for any visible issues, such as format painting discrepancies. If you are unable to identify any issues with the translated segments you should attempt to create a copy of the translated file. To do so, go to SDLX Edit Menu: File > Create Translation and then click OK in the dialog box. This will generate a copy of the translated file to a location on your machine; if the process is completed successfully, you should see a message window indicating where the translated file is stored. If the translated file failed to be created, there could be a problem with the ITD file. If an error message is generated you can search this Knowledge Base system using the error to identify any relevant information.

    SDXLIFF (Studio Packages)

    Opening the SDLXLIFF file using Trados Studio:

    Check for error messages when opening the file. 
    Check if the suggested encoding and source language is correct. 
    Verify the file via Tools > Verify and check for error messages. 
    Go to File > Save Target As and check for error messages or open the created target file. 

    If the bilingual file is corrupted, download the file again from SDL TMS and attempt to validate the file (using the same steps as above). If the file validates, copy the translations from the corrupted file and attempt the validation process again. If the file validates after the translation has been copied over, attempt to upload the file into SDL TMS.

    If the error thrown during the creation of the target file is Unexpected exception during ITD file writing: Error accessing ITD file, this would suggest that a Studio package was downloaded, featuring ITD file filetypes, but the user is attempting to upload the sdlxliffs only.  As those sdlxliffs contain a pointer to the ITD in the Studio Package that needs to be rebuilt, this will fail as that ITD will not be present during the upload. The Translator should therefore generate a Studio Return Package and upload this instead.
