FALSE ALARM. I figured it out!

To find A PARTICULAR Contact, you need to be in the Contacts tab when running the search. I was in the Customers tab. Because the search box above is labelled ‘Full Text Search’, I somehow assumed it was a program-wide search (which would be very cool, btw).

If you wish to find a contact from customer list, process will be longer.

Right click on table header > Edit filter > add new condition > select Contacts field > select FullName nested field, and provide a value using Contains comparator.

You will see list of customers who has contacts whose full name contains 'son' (case-independent)
