Word automatically launching with dozens of blank documents

I'm running Studio 2017 with Office 365. When I start up Windows 10, Word will often launch automatically with dozens of blank or nearly blank documents. This is strange because Word is not in my Startup folder or otherwise configured to launch automatically when I start Windows. And because each Word document is a separate instance, I can't just quickly kill Word in the Task Manager. Instead, I have to kill each instance separately or close each window manually in Word. The right-click and close all windows command from the taskbar doesn't work either, because I have to click through all of the Autorecover dialog boxes first. This is really annoying and time-consuming!

The reason seems to be that Studio opens Word instances to use the spell check feature but doesn't always close these instances properly, generating a mess of autorecover files somewhere. I can tell because if one of these documents isn't just blank, it often contains snippets of text from translations I was working on in Studio. For reasons beyond me, Word tries to restore all of these automatically when I start Windows.

I need a solution or at least a workaround that's better than always checking the task manager to make sure all instances of Word are closed when I shut down or restart. There are too many situations where that isn't possible and then I have the nasty surprise of having to wait 20 minutes before I can get my machine is any usable state again.

    I believe this is a known bug in 365 but with no fix date-


    A solution might be as follows (suggested on the MS forum)

    I found that creating a new profile is was required to solve this issue.  MS Office has a "Repair" function, which is accessed on Windows 10 by going to All Settings --> Apps, and Under "Apps & Features, find "Microsoft Office 365 - en-us", click on it Once and it will give you two options, "Modify" or "Uninstall", select "Modify".  From there click "Yes" to allow changes to your device, assuming you have the privileges to do so or get your administrator to assist with this process.  Then, an Office window will appear asking if you want to do a "Quick Repair" or "Online Repair".  I chose "Quick Repair" and found success, and would suggest that you do this first, restart your computer to see if it works.  If not, then do the "Online Repair".  If that doesn't work, then create a new profile as a last resort.

    Thanks for the quick response. Can you provide some additional details on the fix that involves creating a new profile? There wasn't much information about that in the Microsoft thread. Do you mean simply create an additional user profile in Windows or replace the one I'm currently using?

    Yes- create a new profile (im not actually sure you can remove an existing one)

    1) In Outlook, select File > Account Settings > Manage Profiles.
    2) Choose Show Profiles > Add.
    3) In the Profile Name box, type a name for the profile, and then choose OK.

    This should then be your default admin profile.

    This is what is suggested on the Windows user forums - Outlook is probably deemed the main 'application' within the Office suite so my assumption would be that all other apps- (Word Excel etc. are lower in the hierarchy and therefore adopt the main settings from Outlook.
