Translation text before <mrk> tag in sdlxliff

We regulary experience the following problem in SDLXLIFF files: Translation text *before* the <mrk> tag (which is not even visible in the Studio Editor).
It’s always the first segment.

Example:

<trans-unit id="7ad28abe-0e8e-469e-a458-0969f9caa1a0">
<source>General Description of the Production Line</source>
<seg-source><mrk mtype="seg" mid="1">General Description of the Production Line</mrk></seg-source>
<target>Allgemei<mrk mtype="seg" mid="1">Allgemeine Beschreibung der Produktionslinie</mrk></target>
</trans-unit>

Result after export:
<title>AllgemeiAllgemeine Beschreibung der Produktionslinie</title>

What could the problem be? The translator starting to type too fast..? In the Editor, only the correct text is visible:
Allgemeine Beschreibung der Produktionslinie

Thanks in advance for any feedback...

  • Hello

    Could you please elaborate a bit, so we have a better understanding of the issue?

    - What is the type of the source file? Is it an xml?

    - In your example there is source and target text as well. Is this how the original source file looks like?

    - If I understand correctly, you would like to exclude the content between the <mrk> tags from translation?

    Hoping to hear back from you.

    Best wishes,
    Greta

    Hi Greta,

    Correct. The source file is a standard DITA XML file, like so:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE concept PUBLIC "-//OASIS//DTD DITA Concept//EN" "concept.dtd">
    <concept id="general_description" xml:lang="de-DE">
     <title>General Description of the Production Line</title>
     <conbody>
    ...........

    The translated text is inserted before the MRK tag which SHOULD be there in the SDLXLIFF file. In the Studio (2015 or 2017) Editor, this MRK tag is not visible, as it shouldn’t be. It is part of the Internal structure of the SDLXLIFF. So translators should not be able to insert any text *before* tag
    <mrk mtype="seg" mid="1">:

    <trans-unit id="7ad28abe-0e8e-469e-a458-0969f9caa1a0">
    <source>General Description of the Production Line</source>
    <seg-source>
    <mrk mtype="seg" mid="1">General Description of the Production Line</mrk>
    </seg-source>
    <target>Allgemei<mrk mtype="seg" mid="1">Allgemeine Beschreibung der Produktionslinie</mrk></target>
    <sdl:seg-defs><sdl:seg id="1" conf="Translated" origin="interactive">
    <sdl:value key="SegmentIdentityHash">UsUujcM4LsJkKSQf379kMjVjj80=</sdl:value>
    <sdl:value key="created_by">LAPTOP-MHGIPR54\UM</sdl:value>
    <sdl:value key="created_on">10/16/2018 15:45:34</sdl:value>
    <sdl:value key="last_modified_by">LAPTOP-MHGIPR54\UM</sdl:value>
    <sdl:value key="modified_on">10/16/2018 15:45:42</sdl:value>
    <sdl:value key="SDL:ProjectTranslationHash">-1803640350</sdl:value>
    <sdl:value key="SDL:OriginalTranslationHash">-1803640350</sdl:value></sdl:seg></sdl:seg-defs>
    </trans-unit>

    It’s always the first segment of a file where this happens.

    Here a screenshot of the Editor:

    As you see, the first part "Allgemei" is not visible in the Editor.  The extra text will only show up when exporting the target file.

    It almost seems as if the translator starts typing when the segment is not fully opened yet or before a TM match could be pasted by the system?

    Hope this helps..

    Hi

    Thank you for the details.

    Could you please send me this file or a similar one where the same issue happens, for testing, if possible? To see if we can recreate the issue, to see what might cause this. My email address is gmagyar@sdl.com

    Best wishes,
    Greta
