I receive Excel files from a customer which require the use of the filetype Bilingual Excel to check string length limitations, but I cannot process them because I get this error
I have been able to find out the cause of this error, it is the colour used for part of the text in Excel (in this case [ENTER])
This is the file with that contains this single cell in A1
Trados does not like this colour.xlsx
A few additional remarks:
- if I use the standard Excel filetype I get no error
- if I change the colour to a standard green (see below) I get no error
Trados likes this colour.xlsx
Replacing all the occurrences of the colour not liked by Bilingual Excel requires too much time.
Is there a solution?

I tested in Trados 2021 first:
So that's good. So I then tested in 2019:
Also fine. Can you share a screenshot of your settings and also confirm the version of Studio you're using... the full version number?
these are my settings
This is my Trados version
Maybe one thing... how are you creating your project? Single file project or using a template?
I have used my standard template. The file initially is recognized by the standard Excel filetype, then I disable the standard Excel filetype, enable and set the bilingual Excel filetype and get the error.
Now I have tried using the single file method. Also in this case the file is recognized by the standard Excel filetype, then I change filetype and this time I get no error. Why? However, I cannot open the file, I get this error
When you say you used your "standard template" what does this mean? How was it created and when did you create it? Is it a template you brought in from a previous version of Studio or did you recreate it in Studio?
On this last error... the only time I have seen this relates to this:
I have closed Trados, deleted the file Default.sdltpl in C:\Users\Deastis\Documents\Studio 2019\Project Templates
I have reopened Trados. A new default template has been automatically created.
I edited the template disabling the standard excel filetype, enabling bilingual Excel and setting it as follow
I have tried to create a project and I get the usual error
Then I also tried the single file way
I have used File/Options, I have disabled the standard excel filetype, enabled bilingual Excel setting it as above
then I have chosen Translate as single document and I get this error
I don't know what else I can do, can you provide a project template that I can import in Trados and solves this issue?
In this case it doesn't look as though the template is the problem. Have you tried running Studio as an administrator as mentioned earlier? The error message you're getting suggests a different problem.
Running studio as administrator, when I add the file I get this error
I'll wait for Trados 2021
Are you sure you gave me the file with this problem in it? I do recall a problem like this some time ago, and I could repro in the past.
I sent you a complex file from my customer a few weeks ago, and you wrote you had no problem with the file on your machine. Then my customer sent me another file and this time I was able to find out exactly the cells which generate the error. So I posted a file with a single cell called Trados does not like this colour.xlsx in my first post above. This is enough for me to get the error (both at home with Trados 2019 freelance and here with Trados 2019 Professional).
