Choose Studio and MultiTerm Installation Folders

In a world where SSDs are still much more expensive than hard drives (around 5 times per GB), many user of desktop PCs opt to boot from a small SSD containing the operating system, and then install programs and data on a much larger HDD.

The Studio and MultiTerm installers should provide the option to choose an installation drive and path just as almost every other Windows application does. While there is a workaround for this, it requires a certain level of technical expertise that most translators should not be required to learn simply to install their CAT tools in a location of their choice. This method is also not officially supported by SDL Support.

  • I can definitely NOT believe this: August 14th, 2018, I received a message saying:

    This definitely annoying lack of functionality in the setup routine is unbelievable.

    It is a standard function in almost every other software application, including other CAT-tools, just to mention.

    Where is the problem? It is, in my opinion, just about to enable this option in the setup routine. As far as I know, this is enabled by default in the common setup routines. SDL just deselected, dropped an disabled it. Why?

    If SDL doesn't want to enable this option, the only reason I can see is a problem in the whole structure of the Trados application. Maybe the programmers expect some real problems if the installed program is not placed on the system drive.

    I can only emphasize that this kind of programming and not enabling the required installation option is totally out of time.

    There are several reasons why some users and I have to install in another location. I did install Trados 2014 on another drive, I didn't encounter any problems. I have still not installed Trados 2017. I would have done it weeks ago, but until now I didn't have the time to repeat this boring process of doing it manually. I reread the installation instructions from the support technician Nick Date, thank you very much for a good description. Another support technician, Vlad, helped to identify the correct filenames for the 2017 version, thanks to you, too.

    I just do not believe all this.
