Word counts are only visible in the e.g. the Confirmation Statistics and some of the other view parts that are typically below the Projects list. I suggest making the Project's total source word count an additional, optional, column that you could add to the Projects list.
There is a strong use case for it I believe. If you have lots of projects with tight deadlines, you would want to sort your projects according to deadline and without clicking them individually also see the Word Count in a separate column right next to the deadline.
