In the program (SDL Trados Business Manager 5.2.0), it's called:
‘Customer code’
But in the online Help docs (e.g. community.sdl.com/.../customers ), it's called:
‘Client code’
PS: what's the ‘Short name’ for again? Can't find mention of it in the Help docs.

Indeed :) Just fixed it in docs. There was an intention to rename customers to clients, but then this idea was abandoned 
As for short name, thank you, indeed info about it is missing. I've just added description to docs as well. Here it is:
Short name is used in invoice/job/project/assignment numbering variables, in price-list short descriptions (generated automatically), to automatically name invoice files, and other functions.

Well, just re-checked. Indeed, things are a bit more complex. Users needed more codes (for some reasons, I'm not sure why), so we have full name, short name and customer code.
In addition to my previous answer, the logic is as is:
- Documents numbers: customer code is used; if code is empty, short name is used;
- Invoice file names: the same.
So, in these two cases customer code prevails over short name
