Idea Delivered

This has been delivered with Studio 2021 where you can customize number, date, time, currency and measurement formats, including using non-breaking spaces as appropriate.

Better currency and percentage symbols management, with support of unbreakable space

Hi,

SDL Trados Studio is able to automatically change the currency number formats, just as in the screenshot below, that is converting $2,000 into 2°000$:

Yet, at least in Canadian French, the right format should be 2°000°$, with an unbreakable space before the dollar symbol, this way:

I did not find any parameter to change it in Studio, including in the last 2017 version. That is those changes have to be done manually, which can be a big waste of time in financial documents.

Also, when I have a series of monetary figures, like below, the unbreakable space in the unconfirmed subsequent figures (if they have an unbreakable space previously inserted) is removed by Studio when I confirm the first one:

   >>>

Lastly, and likey a consequence of it, when I run a QA Check (F8), SDL trados find an error when $22,30 (or any other fiure) is translated into 22,30°$, but not if it is traslated inot 22,30$:

By the way, QA check sees an error as soon as a figure (it being an amount, a percentage or a date) is written in the translated segment with an unbreakable space. E.g., 21°octobre, 3,57°% or 1°200°$, respectively for october 21st, 3.57% or $1,200. Unlike the issues previously described, which are more of a missing function, the latter one lokks more like a bug, since Studio does not recognize figures which, basically, are the same.

I hope you will be able to fix in a next SR those issues all and every French translators undergo since Studio 2009.

Thank you

  • However, what I do no understand is why the features in the yellow rectangle below are not available when you prepare a project, while you can access and use them once the project is ready. You have then to re-open the Settings windows and choose the right options, to re-pretranslate the files. That is double work.

    Hello, SDL Team?

I totally agree, Studio has pretty much everything to be great, but there are too many problems that spoils the overall experience. And now I feel they are relying heavily on crowdsourcing (via the SDL appstore) to fix the incomplete features.

The Number Verifier plugin is a good example in my opinion. The whole plugin should be the normal Number verifier feature of Studio. Or else, just remove the current number verification feature since it does not work!

I don’t know if you’ve taken the last SDL polls, but their intent to release a cloud-based Studio is obvious. And that really worries me for several reasons…

I could go on and on about all the problems regarding SDL and Studio, but I think a proper thread would be more appropriate!

Anyway, I seriously hope you guys will be able to use those basic features (auto-propagation and number verification) soon. I lost so much time with manual checks when they did not work at all for French…

  • Also, SDL team should improve their communication with users and offer a direct canal, such as a chat or a ticket system. That company works as a black box. I wonder how they can go in the right direction without listening to their users feedback.

  • You're absolutely right. I cannot admit that, after 10 years, users still have to undergo "Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection" error messages and other messages alike. Error management is fundamental in any good programming activity. Worse, why are their error messages that cryptic? The only thing those boxes actually tell the user is that there was an issue, whatever the message is, but they give neither any useful information nor any tip to solve or avoid the problem.

The ribbons is less a problem for me, since I know where to find the options I need; also, IMHO, the ribbon is rather customizable —, except (but it may be just on my computer) that my Quick Access toolbar does not work any more since SR2; The option icons I put in it do not appear any longer.

Another thing is that I am not sure Studio's memory management is very good. When I've been working for a couple of days on big or multiple projects without closing it, Studio gets slower, until I restart it... Also, switching from the editor window to the LookUp/Translation results/Messages/etc. and back takes about 10 seconds...

Also, why is the Search/Replace sometimes unavailable, or why is the insert function (CTRL+1, +2, etc.) sometimes not working? Those are essential functions that exist since 2009. How can they still be buggy?

Lastly, I totally agree with you too on your last parapraph.

Studio is a nice software, no doubt, but some lack of maintenance, error management or care spoils too often the user experience. Rather than having users waiting for months that bugs or lacks are (maybe) remedied, the SDL team should do some continuous improvement and post weekly or monthly updates, just like MS does each Tuesday for Windows.

That's too bad. Actually, I forgot to precise I was not recommending this app as I have never tried it myself.

The idea I failed to convey is that the existence of such plugins will probably not encourage SDL to fix those number check issues anytime soon.

Let's hope I am wrong and the next version of Trados will be a whole new build that will fix everything that has never worked properly… Unicorn
